Hanging the Laundry to Dry!

We have lived in our current house for 2 1/2 years. My clothes lines have clearly been haning in the back yard long before we moved in, however, I just now decided to actually use them!

With promises of temps around 80 degrees and a good breeze I decided to wash our bedding and hang it out to dry. In the process, I turned it into a fun little "science experiment" for my 3-year old. He loves to help with laundry but I have never taken the time to explain to him what the washer and dryer actually do.

So, as we took the bedding off the bed and put into the washer I explained to him the purpose of the washer and dryer. He understood that what goes into the washer gets wet and then we put it into to the dryer so it gets dry. After our items had been washed we put them into a laundry basket and took them outside.

I simply explained to Seth that instead of using the dryer we were going to do an "experiment" and see if the sun and wind would dry our sheets. So, we hung up our wet sheets and then went about our business for the morning. Okay, I hung the sheets and Seth made sure to point out where all the dog poop was so I wouldn't step in it. Thanks, buddy!

After about 3 hours we went out to check on our laundry. Seth was so excited and exclaimed "It is dry, the sun and wind dryed our stuff!" I was amazed too. Not that I didn't believe it would work, but that I had never done this before and my little 3 year old got so excited about something so simple. It is amazing what their little minds find fascinating! He also made sure to tell me how nice the wind and sun were to dry our sheets:)

I wonder how many other every day jobs I do that I can make a science experiment out of? Laundry sure is more fun around here now!

Raspberry Black Bean Dip

If you have ever lived in Manhattan, KS I certainly hope you have taken time to eat at the So Long Saloon! I went to college at Kansas State University and the So Long Saloon was one of my all time favorite places to eat. When my friends first tried to get me to eat this appetizer called Raspberry Black Bean Dip, I thought they were crazy. After one bite I think we ended up ordering more because it was so good!

Another friend of mine loved this stuff, too, and she created her own version which I am going to share with you. Certainly not as good as the real deal, but a close a second!

Raspberry Black Bean Dip: Serves 4-6

1 can of Black Beans drained and rinsed=.50 (you can get these at Aldi special times during the year)
1 8 oz. block of cream cheese=.50 (This is what I usually pay after coupons)
1 bottle of Broncoo Bob's Chipotle Raspberry Sauce (see image here) =7.49 (find in condiments section at Dillons... maybe elsewhere)

Directions:
First, drain and rinse black beans and put into 2 qt. baking dish. Cube cream cheese and place on top of beans. Place in pre-heated 350 degree oven for 3-5 minutes. Just long enough for cheese to become soft.

Then, pull the dish out of the oven and stir together beans and cheese.

Last, add about 1/3 of a bottle of Raspberry Chipotle Sauce on top. Spread it around evenly and bake for another 10-15 minutes.

Serve with tortilla chips!

Menu Plan Monday 4/12

Here is my "actual" menu from last week and then what I plan have planned for this week on our $50/week budget.

Last week:

Monday: I forgot about my left over Easter ham I had. Thankfully I saw this post on MSM and Ham and Broccoli quiche! It was super yummy!
Tuesday: Biscuits and gravy with potatoes and fruit
Wednesday: Cheeseburger Rolls (from the freezer), Raspberry Black Bean dip and green beans
Thursday: Chicken Tetrazzini, steamed broccoli and bread
Friday: BBQ at my parent's house. Some extended family was in town and we all got together on a whim.
Saturday: Date night with the hubby. Used a gift card and ate at Red Lobster.

This week:
Sunday: Left overs from BBQ at my parent's house
Monday: Jason's Deli (the company we have our Life Insurance through hosts a "camp" dinner every 6 weeks were they pay $3 toward everybody's meal. For our family we get $12 and we can all definitely eat for only $12 at Jason's Deli! Seth and Levi split a kids meal and then Ryan and I do the sandwich and salad combo... He gets the sandwich and I get the salad bar. The total is just under $12:)
Tuesday: Parmesan Chicken with sweet potatoes and Caesar salad
Wednesday: Hamburger Potato Casserole, green beans and apples with cream cheese dip
Thursday: Left overs
Friday: Pizza and raw veggies

I will be posting my recipe for Raspberry Black Bean dip tomorrow. I know it may sound gross but it is supper yummy! See you then!
